Welcome to the Bird Heavy Civil Limited website. We are proud of our 80+ years in the heavy civil engineering construction business.
At Bird Heavy Civil our goal is to provide our people with a safe and effective work environment that will allow them to use their exceptional skills to exceed the expectations of modern owners. Our focus is on the mining, renewable energy and infrastructure industries. In everything we do we conduct ourselves with the utmost of integrity.
Formerly known as H.J. O’Connell Ltd., Bird Heavy Civil Ltd. has since its inception in 1931 built a solid reputation for providing "on time on budget" performance while constructing some of Canada’s most interesting projects. We have been involved in the massive Churchill Falls, NL and James Bay Hydro Developments, QC, construction of super highways as well as roads in remote locations, the Voisey Bay Nickel Project, NL, the Long Harbour Hydrometallurgical Facility, NL, the Wuskwatim Generating station, MB, expansion of facilities at many mines including Iron Ore Company of Canada (Rio Tinto), NL, Arcelor Mittal (formally Quebec Cartier Mining), QC, Wabush Mines (Cleveland Cliffs), NL and numerous other important projects. In several cases we have a continuous record of business with clients that exceeds forty years.
We look to the future with confidence. Recent years have seen our people successfully expanding the business in a planned and deliberate manner. Our equipment fleet is one of the largest and most modern in the country, especially in the larger mining sized units.
