Voisey's Bay Nickel Project
The Voisey's Bay Nickel Project boasts one of the world's richest and most economically exploitable nickel discoveries. Located on the coast of Labrador in Northeastern Canada, it is owned by Vale Inco, the western world's largest nickel company. As is the case with many Canadian Mining Projects, H.J. O'Connell Limited was a major player in the development. O'Connell's senior personnel were instrumental in forging a historic alliance that brought together the Labrador Inuit, the Innu Nation (the two aboriginal groups most profoundly affected by the project), O'Connell, Labrador Construction and Peter Kiewit Sons, resulting in the entity IKC-Borealis. Together, we completed all the civil infrastructure work for the project including: site excavation, access roads, all concrete structures and foundations, initial earthworks in preparation for mining, main dock, dames and containment, dykes, etc. We are very proud to say that throughout this process we dedicated considerable resources to successfully training aboriginal workers in co-operation with our partners, the Labrador Inuit Association and the Innu Nation.
