Railway Spur and Access Road
As part of the re-opening of the iron ore mine in Fire Lake, QC, H.J. O`Connell was awarded the contract to construct a new railway spur, ore loading pad, and access road to the mine. The project consisted of the construction of a 600 m long railway spur with an adjacent loading pad (25 x 300 m), and the construction of 2 km of access road. Over 40,000 m3 of excavation and 130,000 m3 of rock and gravel fill were required to complete the project. Despite being awarded the contract late in the 2005 construction season, and the isolated location of the project, 50% of the project was completed in a 4 week period in October and November of 2005.
