Long Harbour Processing Plant - Port Site Concrete
H.J. O’Connell was awarded the contract to complete earthworks, concrete and electrical on the Long Harbour Processing Plant Port Site. Structures completed on this contract included Building 211 - concentrate/limestone storage building; Building 212 - concentrate/limestone crushing and grinding; 282 - external utility racks throughout the port site; and 214 - sulfuric acid storage tanks.
In total, over 17,700 m³ of concrete was poured, 21,500 m² of formwork was constructed, and over 135,300 m³ of excavation and backfill was conducted.
One of the primary challenges on this project included the importance of meeting strict deadlines. Large modules arrived on site weekly and several areas were required to be completed and vacated before arrival. To overcome this challenge, H.J. O’Connell employees worked both day and night shifts to ensure modules could be placed upon arrival or were able to be transported up to the plant site without delay.
